The design, delivery and particularly, through-life support of complex engineering assets is expensive, to both supplier and customer. To reduce these costs as much as practicable without overly compromising the capability required by the customer, both the design and the infrastructure within which the assets are to be operated and supported are analysed and the results of these analyses used to recommend changes to either the design or the support infrastructure.

This practice is known as Support Engineering and serves to provide maximum value for money.
