LSC Group, a keen supporter of the Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen Families Association (SSAFA) Forces Help, recently presented the charity with a cheque for £3600 as a result of employee fundraising activities. During 2009, LSC Group chose SSAFA as its corporate charity and has been constantly looking at ways in which they can raise funds for this worthy cause. LSC Group Contracts Manager, Kathy Browne, jumped 13,000ft at around 130mph raising £3000 for the charity back in June; whilst Ian Sloss, Executive Consultant, ran the London Triathlon for SSAFA in August. Ian completed the course in 3 hours 7 minutes, knocking 21 minutes off his time last year, and in the process managed to raise £600 in the run up to the event and a further £400 since – bringing his total to £1000 for SSAFA.
SSAFA is working hard to improve the lives of service men, women and their families. One of their initiatives – Norton Homes – provides accommodation to families of injured service personnel, allowing them to be close to their loved ones whilst they are being treated. The homes, designed as ‘home from home’, provide safe and supportive accommodation for partners, children and parents as they come to terms with news of a serious injury. The second Norton Home, the original one being located at Headley Court, Surrey, opened in the West Midlands in February 2009. The home is close to the Royal College for Defence Medicine at Selly Oak, Birmingham often the first port-of-call for injured personnel returning to the UK. These homes are providing vital support to service personnel and their families. They are available 365 days a year and are run by dedicated on-site teams who are there to offer support, comfort and advice to those who stay at what is often a very difficult and emotionally challenging time. George Webb, LSC Group Managing Director, has been a supporter of this charity for some years, and is keen to raise the profile of SSAFA. “SSAFA is a very deserving cause and one close to our industry and hearts especially since Iraq and now Afghanistan. Service men, women, and their families need our support. With LSC being located within the home of the Staffordshire Regiment, and the nearby Selly Oak Norton Home, we hope local people will get behind SSAFA in these difficult times”
