The Aircraft Carrier Alliance (ACA) is a unique partnering relationship between industry (Babcock, BAE Systems and Thales UK) and the UK Ministry of Defence (MOD) and is responsible for delivering the Queen Elizabeth Class (QEC), soon to be the biggest and most powerful surface warship ever constructed, to the Royal Navy.
The ACA required a framework for ensuring that all information captured during build would be structured and managed effectively. This would be critical to the manufacture process but also the sustainability of the ships as they are brought into service. Managing large amount of engineering and design information, produced by many organisations across a vast supply chain - critical to the manufacture and sustainability of the ships through-life.
LSC Group, a member of Babcock, has been delivering Information & Knowledge Management (IKM) support to the QEC programme since the Demonstration phase and throughout Manufacture. Working to build up a comprehensive knowledge base, LSC Group staff have developed a framework for consolidating the critical information that will support the ships through-life. With significant Supportability Engineering experience, the LSC Group specialist has a broad experience of engineering data and its criticality to delivering effective support through-life.
Establishing a comprehensive framework for managing and integrating the various information and knowledge held for the QEC, LSC Group has established a complete I&KM solution to support the ship as it is brought into service.
Specific benefits include:
Enhanced supportability tasks during design including Codification, Technical Documentation, Maintenance and Sparing
LSC Group continues to provide invaluable cost modelling support to the ACA as the programme develops. Elsewhere, the Cost Capability Trade Off (CCTO) model has been adapted for use across other high profile Maritime programmes, whilst the Through-Life Cost (TLC) model is being developed in response to a number of affordability questions relating to other major MOD assets.
